There are so many games that have taken the battle royale world by storm, like PUBG and Fortnite
Even Call of Duty has a battle royale game in its illustrious line-up now.
. But despite their popularity, they aren’t the top games everywhere.
YouTube’s director of gaming content and partnerships, Ryan Watts told. According to The Verge report, these games have been beaten by a nine-year-old survival game: Minecraft.
“Fortnite has certainly been a massive contributor to the growth on gaming [but] Minecraft is still our biggest game globally,” Wyatt said. “Fortnite has not taken off in every single market.” A sandbox video game, Minecraft was created in 2011 by Swedish game developer Markus Persson The game was later developed by Mojang. In the game, players can use a variety of different blocks to build structures in a 3D procedurally generated world besides exploring, resource gathering, combat etc.
Despite being almost a decade-old, Minecraft had 74 million active players in December 2017, which is a record-breaking feat. Compared to that, Fortnite just had a mere 3.4 million concurrent players earlier this year. Minecraft, though an old title, gets new content updates every time, so it has something new to offer to its players.
“It’s a very Westernized look when you look at just the Fortnite lens, of how big Fortnite has been,” Wyatt told The Verge. “But when you start to look at these other countries and regions, we’re actually seeing explosive growth from the mobile gaming category that’s pretty underrepresented in the West.”
“I think there are a lot of things that are happening outside of the US, outside of Western Europe, that is causing a lot of growth for gaming on YouTube that are kinda understated.”
